Welcome Home Program
Our refugee welcome home program began in 2020 and is a partnership with Church World Services to furnish homes for refugee families new to our country. We set up their homes to be move-in ready complete with furniture, bathroom and bedroom items, kitchen items, toys, books, backpacks, clothing and shoes, household items, and more!
In 2022 we welcomed over 100 families from Africa, the Dominican, Afghanistan, and Ukraine.
Our Welcome Home Program continues to expand
We facilitate home move-ins for each refugee family that arrives in Harrisonburg through Church World Services. This consists of collecting all the items on the Government provided required list and upon hearing of a family that has arrived, we assemble a volunteer team to transport all the items to the home and unload and set up the entire house.
We began a refugee cleaning program in 2022 where we visit each family about a week after they have moved in to introduce them to how to clean their new home. Many of the families are not familiar with the cleaning products we use or how to care for their new home so we provide all of the cleaning supplies they need and go over the basics of cleaning with them including how to clean their floors, their bathrooms, and how to clean up their kitchen after cooking.
Refugee Day Camp
In 2023 we held our first refugee fun day camp to help bring together many of the new families in our area and provide a day full of sports, crafts, food, and community.
